Gamifying Film Flops: Watch Dogs Movie Closes Filming, Set to Improve on Borderlands’ Bungled Bid

Watch Dogs Movie Wraps Filming

After a summer of cameras rolling, the live-action Watch Dogs movie has completed principal photography. Ubisoft celebrated the milestone with a social media post, announcing, “Film wrapped!” without providing much more information. The film is directed by Mathieu Turi, with Sophie Wilde and Tom Blyth starring. Markella Kavenagh, who recently joined the cast, is also making her mark on the film.

Cast and Crew

Australian actress Sophie Wilde plays a leading role, joined by Markella Kavenagh, who recently confirmed her addition to the film. While both actresses are from Australia, it’s unlikely they’ll be playing Australian characters, given the common practice of casting international actors as English or Americans in big-budget movies.

The Watch Dogs Movie: Will it Succeed?

We previously expressed doubts about the movie’s viability, citing concerns about the lack of depth in the Watch Dogs franchise. The games don’t have the same level of worldbuilding as Assassin’s Creed, making it unclear what the license brings to the table. However, the success of the Assassin’s Creed movie and Ubisoft’s willingness to take risks with other projects, such as Werewolves Within, may indicate that this film could surprise us.

Mixed Expectations

Our initial skepticism aside, we’re curious to see what the film brings to the table. With a lack of context and information surrounding the story, it’s difficult to gauge the project’s potential. However, the success of Werewolves Within, which explored a standalone horror-comedy concept without relying heavily on the game’s lore, suggests that Ubisoft is willing to take creative risks and adapt their IPs in interesting ways.
