Whistleblower Exposes WhatsApp Hack: Journalists’ Phone Spying Scandal

WhatsApp Cracks Down on Israeli Spyware Company Paragon
Security-conscious messaging app WhatsApp has taken action to disrupt a spyware campaign that targeted vulnerable individuals, including journalists, civil society members, and others. According to recent reports from The Guardian and Reuters, the malicious campaign was launched by Paragon Solutions, an Israeli spyware company.
WhatsApp Takes a Stand Against Spyware
WhatsApp has reportedly reached out to affected users, notifying them that they were likely targeted and possibly compromised. The Meta-owned app has also sent a cease-and-desist order to Paragon and is exploring legal options.
Paragon: A Competitor to Pegasus Maker NSO Group?
Paragon Solutions, which was acquired by a US-based private investment firm last year, bills itself as an "ethical" cyber defense company. However, recent reports suggest that the company has strong ties to Pegasus maker NSO Group and has even secured a $2 million contract with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to provide its services.
WhatsApp’s Response: Holding Spyware Companies Accountable
In a statement, WhatsApp emphasized the importance of holding spyware companies accountable for their illegal actions. "This is the latest example of why spyware companies must be held accountable for their unlawful actions," the company said. "WhatsApp will continue to protect people’s ability to communicate privately." Unfortunately, the app didn’t immediately respond to inquiries from The Verge regarding further information on the situation.
Remember: security-conscious individuals, ensure you’re protecting your digital life by using reputable apps and staying aware of potential threats.
