VWs ID.7 EV Cancellation: What Happened to the Much-Anticipated Electric Vehicle

The Volkswagen ID.7: Cancelled in the US, But What’s Next?

The Electric Sedan That Never Was

The Volkswagen ID.7 was once hailed as a major player in the brand’s EV strategy for the North American market. In 2023, VW flew a select group of journalists, including my boss, to Spain to test drive an early prototype. The car was touted as the culmination of everything VW had learned from its EV experience, a crucial part of the brand’s future in the US post-Dieselgate. But fast forward to 2025, and according to a report from The Car Guide, the ID.7 won’t be sold in the US after all.

Was it a Good Idea to Scrap the ID.7?

In hindsight, this isn’t particularly surprising. We wrote about the delayed debut and asked the question: Will anyone miss it? VW was asked the same question, and it appears they decided to scratch the model from their North American plans entirely.

What’s Next for VW’s Electric Strategy?

In a statement to Automotive News, a company spokesperson cited the “ongoing challenging EV climate” as the reason for the cancelation. It’s a believable explanation, given the general public’s mixed feelings towards EVs and the newly installed US administration’s stance on them.

However, the spokesperson emphasized that electric vehicles remain a core part of VW’s long-term product strategy. New electric models will continue to be introduced for the US market, but unfortunately, the ID.7 is not part of that plan.

Pouring One Out for the ID.7

I’m sad to see the ID.7 go, not just because of the team’s hard work and dedication, but also because it would have been a nice addition to the US market. It was supposed to produce 282 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque, making it a fun and capable car. Unfortunately, it will now be enjoyed by European and Chinese markets instead.

Here’s hoping we’ll see more lovable VWs like the ID.Buzz take its place.
