Verizon Shuts Down Message Plus, Recommends Switching to Google Messages
A New Era in Messaging: RCS and Consolidation
The messaging landscape is changing, and Verizon is leading the way. As RCS (Rich Communication Services) adoption becomes more widespread, especially on iPhones, we’re seeing a shift towards consolidation among messaging apps. Verizon’s decision to shut down its Message Plus app is just the latest example.

In a recent announcement, Verizon revealed that it will be discontinuing its Message Plus app, with the shutdown scheduled for November 7, 2024. The app will no longer be available for download from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, and any previously scheduled messages will not be sent.

So, why is Verizon shutting down Message Plus? The answer is simple: RCS. With RCS, iPhone users can now send RCS messages to Android users, making Message Plus redundant. Verizon is recommending that users switch to Google Messages, which is now preloaded on all Verizon Android devices.
What Does This Mean for You?
- Message Plus users will no longer be able to send and receive messages using the app.
- Verizon recommends switching to Google Messages, which is a more widely used and supported messaging platform.
- If you’re using Message Plus, you’ll need to switch to a new messaging app to stay connected with friends and family.

The consolidation of Android messaging apps in favor of Google Messages is an unintended side effect of RCS adoption on iPhones. However, it’s unlikely to affect many people, as Google Messages is already a popular choice.
