iOS 18.3: The Update That Fixes Confusion and Bugs

Confusion Cleared Up: Summarized Notifications Get a Makeover

Did you ever receive a notification that seemed too good (or bad) to be true? You’re not alone. Apple Intelligence, the feature that summarizes news stories for you, has had its fair share of mistakes. For instance, some users received a notification stating that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested, when in fact, an arrest warrant was issued, but he wasn’t taken into custody. To prevent similar confusion, iOS 18.3 introduces italics for summarized news stories. So, if you’re unsure about the accuracy of a notification, just check if it’s in italics. If it is, it’s likely an AI-generated summary, and you should take it with a grain of salt.

Customizing Your Notifications: The Power is Yours

In iOS 18.3, you now have more control over your notifications. You can disable summarized notifications by going to Settings > Notifications > Summarize Notifications and toggle off the button. Alternatively, you can swipe on a summarized notification from the Lock Screen or Notification Center, tap "Options," and select "Turn Off Summaries."

Calculator App: A Blast from the Past

Remember the days when you could repeat calculations in the Calculator app? iOS 18.3 brings back this popular feature. Simply hit the equal key again, and the app will run the last operation another time. This can be a huge time-saver when you need to perform complex calculations.

Apple Intelligence: The Controversial Default Setting

In iOS 18.3, Apple Intelligence is enabled by default on compatible devices. While this move has raised some eyebrows, it does provide users with the ability to use Apple Intelligence before setting up their new iPhone. The update also enables iPhone 16 series users to improve Visual Intelligence using the Camera Center, allowing them to add event dates to their calendar app and identify animals and plants.

Bug Fixes and Security Patches

iOS 18.3 addresses 29 iOS vulnerabilities, including one that has already been used in attacks. The update also fixes two bugs in the iOS Kernel, the core component of an operating system, which could have allowed malicious apps to gain elevated privileges or execute code with Kernel privileges.

Installing iOS 18.3: A Breeze

You can install iOS 18.3 on your compatible iPhone by going to Settings > General > Software Update. And, as a bonus, the iOS 18.4 beta 1 is expected to become available soon, bringing even more features to the table, including Siri’s ability to search through your email, messages, and calendar to answer personal questions.
