Unshackling My E-Reader: A Review of the Onyx Boox Go 6 Ehavior
The Onyx Boox Go 6: A Promising E-Reader, but Not the Right Fit for Me
I was excited to try the Boox Go 6 e-reader, hoping it would revolutionize the way I read. With its 6-inch E Ink HD Carta 1300 display and adjustable backlight, I expected a seamless reading experience. Unfortunately, my enthusiasm was short-lived.
The Go 6’s e-ink screen, while crisp and clear, was let down by the device’s sluggish performance. Despite its 2GHz octa-core processor and 2GB of RAM, reading was a slow and frustrating experience. Every time I wanted to switch between apps or pages, I had to wait for the screen to catch up, which was frustrating.
Open Reading
I wasn’t surprised to find that my 2021-era Kindle Paperwhite, with its comfortable display and slim profile, offered a better reading experience. But the Boox Go 6’s promise of running Android and allowing me to access third-party apps and stores was alluring. I could upload my own comics and graphic novels and enjoy them on the go.
Loading Up
The Go 6’s file transfer process, using BooxDrop, was a bit cumbersome, but I was happy to load up my library of PDFs, CBR, and EPUB files. The device comes with 32GB of onboard storage, and there’s a microSD slot for expansion.
What’s Inside
The Go 6 is a svelte device, weighing just 233g, and feels comfortable to hold. With its magnetic cover case, it’s a great option for everyday carry. The 6-inch E Ink HD Carta 1300 display has a 1,448 x 1,072 resolution, and the device comes with a 2GHz octa-core processor and 2GB of RAM.
Is it Right for You?
The Onyx Boox Go 6 is a decent alternative to a Kindle Paperwhite for the same price, but it’s not without its limitations. It’s not the best choice for someone new to e-books or digital reading, as the reading experience can be slow and frustrating. However, if you’re looking for a platform-agnostic, non-OLED solution for reading at night, the Go 6 is a good option. Just be prepared to tolerate some waiting for the screen to catch up.
Should You Buy It?
You can find the Onyx Boox Go 6 at Target and Walmart for around $150, which is competitive with the latest Kindle Paperwhite on Amazon. While it’s an interesting alternative, I wouldn’t recommend it as a first e-reader. But if you’re looking for a dedicated e-reader that allows you to load up your own library of books, comics, and magazines, the Go 6 is a solid option, just don’t expect a lightning-fast reading experience.
