Unlocking the Timeless Charm: How the Jeep Liberty Wagoneer’s Woodgrain Design Still Delivers
The Forgotten Wagoneer Package: A Nod to Jeep’s Retro Design
In the early 2000s, Jeep resurrected the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer nameplates after a long hiatus. Although they didn’t revive the classic wood-look paneling, the KJ-generation Liberty did offer a nostalgic touch with the Wagoneer Package. This add-on kit, dealer-installed and not a factory option, added a woodgrain appliqué to the side body panels and tailgate.
What’s the Wagoneer Package?
While information about the Wagoneer Package is scarce, it’s believed to have been marketed as a Jeep-authorized accessory. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find sales brochures online featuring this package. However, a 13-year-old forum post mentions a 2004 Liberty accessories brochure that includes the Wagoneer Trim Appliqué. This kit consisted of nine pieces: one for each fender, one for each door, one for each quarter panel, and one for the tailgate.
A Woody Wonder
The Wagoneer Package added a nostalgic charm to the KJ Liberty, with bright "LIBERTY" emblems and smaller black and gold "WAGONEER" badges on the front doors. Although this retro design might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it’s undeniable that the KJ’s rounded headlights lent themselves well to this woody look. In contrast, the second-generation Liberty might not have fared as well with this design.
Woody Wonders Today
Although you can’t purchase a current Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer with wood-look panels directly from Jeep, several aftermarket companies offer kits to add wood-look vinyl and wood-look trim to these big, body-on-frame SUVs. You’ll either love or hate this retro vibe – we’re guessing the latter! Kudos to the owner of this example for keeping it on (and seemingly off) the road.
