The Nintendo Switch 2 is finally here, and it’s bigger and bolder than its predecessor. The new console features a larger 8-inch screen and redesigned JoyCons that slot into the console with a dedicated port and magnetic sides. The console itself has an additional USB-C port and extra speakers to match today’s handheld PCs, such as the Steam Deck. But there’s still a lot we don’t know, and Nintendo has been vague on specific details, like the console’s specs and game library.
What We Know About the Switch 2’s Specs and Performance
Speculation points to the Switch 2 getting access to a custom Nvidia chip, which could make it more powerful than the original Switch. Leaks have shown a possible custom Nvidia T239 chip, which could be more capable than the current Switch’s modified Tegra X1 chip. However, only time will tell how the new console will perform.
What to Expect in Terms of Games
Nintendo’s reveal trailer showed a new Mario Kart level that’s not currently available in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, suggesting that a new Mario Kart game is coming alongside the Switch 2. The trailer also hinted at a redesigned launch lineup, including the upcoming Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and the 2025 release Pokémon Legends: Z-A. We can only speculate about future games, but Nintendo has traditionally tried to support new hardware with a new 3D Mario title. Will this be a straight follow-up to Super Mario: Odyssey, or something new?
When Can You Preorder the Switch 2?
A Best Buy landing page for the Switch 2 already exists, indicating that preorders may start soon after the company’s next Direct online press conference. There will also be early hands-on events in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, although sign-ups for these events will begin on January 17 at 12 p.m. PT, 3 p.m. ET.
Additional Features and Peripherals
The Switch 2’s Dock will feature two USB-A connections, one HDMI port, an Ethernet port, and a single USB-C connector for power. Some games may not work or be fully compatible with the new Switch 2, according to Nintendo, which will provide more details on its website at a later date. The new console is expected to be compatible with most Switch cartridges from the original console.
When Will You Be Able to Get Your Hands on the Switch 2?
Nintendo hasn’t announced a specific release date, but the company plans a Nintendo Direct on April 2. GameFair events will take place in various locations, including New York, Los Angeles, and Dallas, starting April 4, 6, 11, and 25. These events will be free, but attendees will need a Nintendo Switch Online account.
