Unlock the New Era of Read Receipts: Google Messages Redesign Revolution

Google Messages Read Receipts Get a Bold New Look
Google Messages has been testing a redesign of its read receipts, and the latest update brings a bolder color scheme to the indicator. The change is still in testing, but it’s already rolling out to some users.
Old vs. New
The original design featured a circular background that matched the rest of the message bubble. In dark theme, the checkmarks and ellipsis were white, like the text of your message. The new design, on the other hand, has a white background that makes the read receipts stand out more. While this aids visibility, it may be a bit bold, especially for shorter messages.
Redesign Timeline
Google Messages started rolling out the read receipts redesign in August. The indicator moved from the bottom-right corner of the message bubble, and you can now view timestamps and end-to-end encryption status by swiping left.
Read Receipts Explained
Here’s a breakdown of the different read receipts you might see:
- Ellipsis: Sending
- Single check with ring: Sent
- Double check with ring: Delivered
- Double check solid circle: Read
