Apple’s New AirPods 4 Earbuds: Active Noise Cancellation for All
The latest AirPods 4 earbuds are out now, and they’re shaking things up with a premium tier that brings active noise cancellation (ANC) to the non-Pro edition for the first time. But how does it stack up without the silicone ear tips that come with the AirPods Pro? We dive in to find out.
ANC Without the Tips: Can Apple Pull It Off?
Many were curious about how Apple would manage to make ANC work without the silicone tips that help create a seal, allowing ambient noise to seep in naturally. Early indications suggest that Apple has done a great job of recreating powerful ANC technology, even without the tips.
How Apple Achieved ANC Without Tips
According to Kate Bergeron, Vice President of Hardware Engineering, the team had been working on a solution since 2020 and created a working demo in 2021. The algorithm developed over time, as did the tip-less fit for the earbuds. The key, however, is the powerful H2 chip that can monitor the in-ear fit in real-time and adjust the ANC even when the AirPods aren’t static. Additionally, the equalisers are being micro-managed simultaneously.
A Glimpse into the Tech Behind ANC
“It’s even computationally more intense in many ways than it is with the AirPods Pro,” Bergeron said. Eric Treski, AirPods marketing chief, added, “It’s really, really hard to create this great ANC quality in a non-ear-tip product. The power of the H2 allows that, so we’re actually doing a lot with the H2 chip to manage ANC quality and listen from the mics for environmental noise to make sure we’re canceling as much as possible.”
