Unlock the Future of Ride-Hailing: Watch Tesla’s Robotaxi Unveiling on Thursday Now
Tesla’s Robotaxi Event: What to Expect and How to Watch
On Thursday, Tesla is hosting an exclusive event in California, and it’s expected to be all about its highly anticipated robotaxi, dubbed the "Cybercab." The event, titled "We, robot," was announced on X (formerly Twitter) with the tweet "The future will be streamed live 10/10, 7pm PT https://t.co/YJEjZIYoTA."
Many are eagerly awaiting the unveiling of a prototype of the long-awaited robotaxi, but recent reports suggest that we might only get a bunch of renders. This wouldn’t be the first time Tesla has held a launch event for a product that’s not quite ready for prime time, as we saw with its Optimus humanoid robot.
The robotaxi event was initially expected to take place in August, but it was pushed to the fall. Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, has mentioned that the Cybercab will be a fully autonomous vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals, and the company is working on a ridesharing feature for its app. According to Bloomberg, the vehicle will have two front seats and two doors that open like "butterfly wings."
Musk has also claimed that the robotaxi service will offer passengers "the lowest cost per mile of transport that they’ve ever experienced," potentially even cheaper than a bus ticket or subsidized subway ride. He envisions owners using the robotaxi when they need it, but letting it trundle off to function as an autonomous taxi for paying passengers at other times.
But before Tesla can start using the robotaxi for paying passengers, it has to convince regulators that such a vehicle is safe for public roads. Given the long and rocky road to launching large-scale robotaxi services, as seen with Alphabet-owned Waymo and GM-backed Cruise, a robotaxi service on a meaningful scale is likely years away.
So, how can you watch the event? On Thursday, October 10, the event will begin at 7 p.m. PT and be live-streamed on Tesla’s X account. You can head to the Warner Bros. Discovery movie studio in Burbank, California, to catch the action in person if you’re in the area.
