Unlock the Future of Messaging: Top Google Messages Features Rolling Out Now
Google Messages: What’s New, What’s Stable, and What’s on the Way
Google Messages, the RCS/SMS client, is constantly evolving with new features and improvements. In this article, we’ll explore the current state of the app, including recent launches, stability, and upcoming changes.
Recent Launches (Stable)
The following features have been recently launched and are now stable:
RCS Editing
At the end of May, Google announced RCS message editing, and it finally launched in full last month. With this feature, you can edit an RCS message within 15 minutes of sending it. To do so, long-press the message, tap the pencil icon, and make your changes. An "Edited" label will appear after the changes are saved, and long-pressing the overflow menu will show the original message. However, this feature only works if all participants in the conversation have it enabled.
Dual SIM RCS Support
Dual SIM RCS support was tested and rolled out in January, but was later pulled. However, more reports surfaced in August, suggesting that the feature is now stable. This means that more than one SIM card will appear as "Connected" in Settings > RCS chats, which should aid international RCS adoption.
Read Receipts Redesign
Google is testing a redesign of read receipts that places the checkmarks inside the message bubble. In the new design, read receipts appear at the right and are housed in a circle. For images, the checkmark is overlaid in the bottom-right corner.
Photo Preview Screen
When taking a picture using the inline camera, you’re now taken to a new attachment screen instead of the image immediately appearing in the compose box. This intermediary screen features a fullscreen preview, allowing you to write a message, send the image, or add more attachments before sending.
These changes demonstrate Google’s continued efforts to improve the overall user experience of Google Messages. Whether you’re interested in RCS editing, dual SIM support, read receipts redesign, or photo preview screens, there’s always something new to explore in the app.
