Unlock the Best of Both Worlds: iPhone for Android Enthusiasts

The Unhatched Gem: Oppo Find 8X Pro Review

In the world of smartphones, it’s easy to get lost in the noise of familiarity. But, occasionally, a device comes along that’s so novel, so intriguing, that you can’t help but take notice. The Oppo Find 8X Pro, available in over 50 countries, is one such gem. This sleek, durable flagship boasts features that will leave you wanting more, like its Hasselblad-powered cameras, an 80W charger, and a gigantic 6.78-inch display. What’s more, it’s a smartphone that’s unafraid to pay homage to the best in the game, the iPhone.

Design: A Sleek and Durable Package

First, the design. The Find 8X Pro’s matte Pearl White glass rear panel is a stunner, with silky finish and soft glints whenever it catches the light. You’ll find a large flash in the top left corner, next to the massive circular silver metal module housing the quad-camera sensors. "Oppo" is written in sterling lettering, while the phone is also available in Space Black, a color found on iPhones. The front of the phone is nearly all screen, with a 32MP shooter at the top and an integrated fingerprint reader at the bottom. The sides are wrapped in silver metal, with light gray stripes demarcating the volume rocker on the right and alert slider on the left. The Power button and Quick button also reside on the phone’s right, with the latter functioning like the iPhone’s Action button, allowing for a quick snap with a press.

Display: A Bright and Vivid Canvas

The 6.78-inch OLED Infinity View display is a sight to behold. Whether watching episodes of "Dan Da Dan" or playing "Dead Cells" or "Alien Isolation", I enjoyed vivid hues with sharp details and inky blacks. If you don’t like the default look, you can adjust the color temperature from warm to cold or opt for a custom setting. The adaptive refresh rate, ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz, is ideal for gaming, kicking in maximum brightness and dropping to lower, more power-efficient rates when reading or surfing the web.

UI: A Colorful World of Customization

Color OS, Oppo’s Android 15-based user interface, is a delight. With AI-powered features like Luminous Rendering Engine, it offers over 800 animations and 18% faster touch response. The interface is also incredibly customizable, with options to choose between unified and split notification/quick toggle views, as well as personalize the status bar’s look.

Performance: A Force to be Reckoned With

The Oppo Find 8X Pro is the first smartphone to feature MediaTek’s powerful Dimensity 9400 processor. This 3-nanometer chip, paired with the Trinity Engine, is designed to improve performance and efficiency. The phone’s vapor chamber, graphite layer, and thermal gel work together to keep components cool and running at peak performance. In my testing, I launched over 50 tabs in Google Chrome, had multiple apps open, including Adobe Photoshop Express, Netflix, and G-Suite apps, without experiencing any lag or slowdown. The animations were silky smooth, and the phone stayed cool, even during an hour-long gaming session.

Camera: A World of Wonder

The quad-camera setup, courtesy of Hasselblad, is a highlight of the Find 8X Pro. Each of the four cameras boasts 50 megapixels, with two telephoto shooters offering 3x and 6x optical zoom. The main sensor has a ƒ/1.6 aperture, while the two telephoto lenses have ƒ/2.6 and ƒ/4, respectively. The ultra-wide lens has a ƒ/2.0 aperture. I was thrilled with the results, capturing stunning wide shots and detailed close-ups.

Battery Life: Long and Luminous

The Find 8X Pro delivered 19 hours and 42 minutes of runtime during our 24-hour YouTube video test, set at 50% brightness. However, battery life will vary depending on your usage. I squeezed 12:29 out of the phone, using a mix of social media, YouTube, music, gaming, texting, and calling.

Verdict: A Shining Star

The Oppo Find 8X Pro is a testament to what happens when innovation meets familiarity. With its unique design, dazzling display, and powerful cameras, this phone is a force to be reckoned with. While it may appear to "borrow" from the best, the Find 8X Pro is, in its own right, a shining star. With a price tag of £1,049, it’s an attractive option for those looking for a high-end Android experience with a nod to the iPhone. Just be prepared for a healthy dose of both familiarity and derivativeness.
