Google Maps Timeline Deadline Extended, But You’ll Still Need to Act Soon

If you’re a fan of Google Maps’ Timeline feature, which tracks your locations over time, you might have noticed recent emails and alerts warning you of an impending change. Well, it seems that the deadline to save your Timeline data has been extended, but you still need to take action soon to avoid losing access.

As of December 2024, Google announced that Timeline would only be available on mobile devices, with the web portal set to be shut down near the end of 2024. However, it appears that users are now receiving new notifications with a revised deadline of June 9, 2025. This applies to those who want to keep their data stored in the cloud after that date.

But here’s the catch: the exact deadline may vary depending on your Google account. On my phone, I’m getting a message that sets a deadline of April 6, 2025. So, it’s essential to check your account for personalized notifications.

What’s Going On?

The good news is that you can still keep your data on your phone going forward, but you’ll need to make a few tweaks. To get started, load up Google Maps on your phone, tap on your account picture (top right), and choose "Your Timeline." You’ll be taken step-by-step through the process, and you’ll also be able to select how long your Timeline data is saved for.

But why is this happening? Google hasn’t said much about the reasons behind the change, but it’s likely related to privacy and data security concerns. The company has been pushing to give users more control over their data, and this shift might be part of that effort.

What Does This Mean for You?

The changes will likely be inconvenient for those who enjoyed exploring their travel history through Google Maps on the web or had multiple devices contributing to their Timeline data. With the shift, you’ll need to use your phone to access your Timeline data, and you’ll need to move your data to your device to avoid losing access.
