Unlock Electric Roads: General Motors Integrates Tesla Supercharger Network into GM Vehicles
GM Electric Cars Now Compatible with Tesla’s Supercharger Network
Road trippers, rejoice! General Motors has just made a significant move to make long-distance travel in electric vehicles (EVs) more convenient. Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac EVs can now charge at Tesla’s vast Supercharger network, although you’ll need to purchase an adapter first.
Access to 17,800 Charging Stations
Opening the Supercharger network to General Motors-built EVs adds over 17,800 charging stations to the list of places where you can stop and charge. Tesla’s Supercharger stations are strategically located across the nation, making long-distance travel a breeze. A Supercharger can add up to 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes, giving you peace of mind on those long road trips.
The Catch: An Adapter is Required
However, you can’t simply plug your GM EV into a Tesla Supercharger without an adapter. The charging cable isn’t compatible with the charging port in GM’s cars, so you’ll need to purchase an adapter for $225. The good news is that the adapter will be compatible with all GM EVs built to date, including the GMC Hummer EV, Cadillac Lyriq, and Chevrolet Blazer EV.
A Mobile App for Easy Charging
The adapter will come with a mobile app that lets you locate available Tesla Supercharger stations, check their status, and pay for electricity. The app will also help you navigate the charging process and provide updates on your vehicle’s charging progress.
A Glimmer of Hope: Future-Proof Charging Ports
General Motors plans to make the adapter obsolete by fitting its cars with Supercharger-compatible charging ports directly on the assembly line, starting in 2025. This means that future GM EV owners won’t need to purchase an adapter, making long-distance travel even more convenient.
A Trend in Customer Service
General Motors isn’t the only brand embracing Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS). Carmakers are setting aside their rivalries to provide better customer service. Other brands like Ford, Rivian, Honda, and Volvo are also adopting NACS, allowing their EV owners to charge at Tesla’s Supercharger stations. Charging network operator Electrify America is even planning to integrate Tesla’s NACS plug.
