Android Auto’s Next Update Brings Car Media Control and Teardown Insights
Android Auto is getting a fresh new update, and we’ve got the scoop on what’s new and what’s coming. While this version, 13.0, doesn’t bring any user-facing changes, there’s some exciting stuff cooking behind the scenes.
Car Media Control in Android Auto
Google has been working on bringing AM/FM radio and local media control to Android Auto for a while now, and this update continues that effort. We’ve spotted some new strings that refer to the feature as "Car Media" and detail how it will work with missing or unavailable media. Unfortunately, it’s still unclear when this feature will make its way to users.
Teardown Insights: What We Found
Thanks to our APK Insight tools, we were able to decompile the latest Android Auto update and get a glimpse of what’s new. Here are some interesting findings:
- Icons for the Car Media feature have been added to the app.
- Strings reveal a "Car Media" service label and error messages for when media sources are unavailable or missing.
- Local media sources will be grouped under a "Car Media Sources" label.
