Unleashing the Future: Subaru’s Revolutionary Next-Gen Hybrid Powertrain for Crosstrek and Forester
Subaru’s Electric Future: Meet the Strong-Hybrid System
As we wave goodbye to the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, it’s time to look towards the future. TheJapanese automaker has announced that the new Subaru Crosstrek and Forester will be getting a new breed of hybrid powertrain, dubbed the "strong-hybrid" or S:HEV. But what does this mean for the hybrid future of Subaru?
Understanding the S:HEV
The new S:HEV system combines a 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder engine with an 88-kilowatt electric motor. This powerful combination produces a combined output that’s yet to be specified, but Subaru promises it will "generate a driving performance strong enough to compete in the North American market."
How it Works
Unlike traditional plug-in hybrids, Subaru’s S:HEV system won’t require plugging in. It will instead seamlessly switch between the engine and electric motor, shutting off the engine during low-speed driving and relying on the electric motor to power the car. This technology allows for significant fuel efficiency improvements and reduced emissions.
Impressive Range and Power
The new system also boasts a larger fuel tank, roughly 17 gallons, allowing the Japanese-market Crosstrek to achieve an impressive 621 miles of driving range – a 50% boost from its predecessor.
Charging Up
But what about charging? The good news is that hybrid Crosstrek and Forester owners can still charge small appliances like portable refrigerators, electric kettles, and electric griddles using the battery. This feature is perfect for camping trips or when a power outage strikes.
When Can We Expect it?
The Japanese market Crosstrek will receive the S:HEV system by the end of this year, with the Forester following in April 2025. As for whether these models will make their way to the US, that’s still a mystery waiting to be solved.
