Samsung’s Tri-Folding Phone Concepts Unveiled at CES 2025

The tech world is abuzz with excitement as Samsung Display showcases two tri-folding phone screen concepts at CES 2025. These innovative designs offer a glimpse into the future of smartphone technology, and we’re here to break down the key features and implications.

A Tale of Two Hinges

The two phone display concepts, captured by CNET, demonstrate different folding mechanisms. The first two images show a phone with two hinges and three screen sections, leaving part of the main screen exposed when closed. The third image, however, features a fully inward-folding design, where the device folds fully inwards, protecting the main display.

This latter approach is reminiscent of the Huawei Mate XT, which uses a single display with two hinges that fold in opposite directions, leaving a third of the screen accessible when in normal phone mode.

The Future of Foldable Displays

Samsung has already filed a patent for a Z-Fold foldable display, and industry reports suggest an inward-folding (U-style) handset could be on the horizon. While we’ve seen patents hinting at outward-folding (Z-style) handsets, the fact that these demo units were on show suggests a tri-fold handset launch could be happening sooner rather than later.

What’s Next?

Previous leaks have suggested a Samsung Galaxy tri-fold phone could make an appearance before the end of 2025. With Huawei’s Mate XT already on the market, it’s likely that Samsung’s equivalent will be equally as expensive. Perhaps we’ll see the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 alongside the Galaxy S25 series launch on January 22.
