Unleashing Innovation: Benchmade’s Surprisingly Authentic Take on a Timeless Classic
The Surprising Evolution of Benchmade Knives: From Bali-Songs to a Global Phenomenon
As the world of knives continues to fascinate, one brand stands out for its dedication to innovation and tradition: Benchmade. But not just any kind of knives – we’re talking about the iconic butterfly knives, specifically. The story of Benchmade began with a passion project, and it’s a tale of evolution, innovation, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
The Early Years: A Focus on Bali-Songs
In the 1980s, Cliff De Asis, a true aficionado of butterfly knives, used his expertise to shape a new company: Bali-Song, Inc. "Bali-Song" was a fitting name, especially with the logo featuring a butterfly design. As the company grew, so did its reputation for producing exceptional butterfly knives.
Expansion and Evolution
As the years went by, the company expanded its product line to include various types of knives. This led to a name change: Pacific Cutlery Corp. Butterfly knives remained a staple, with the company producing a vast range of styles, showcasing De Asis’ continued passion for his original product line.
A Move to Oregon and a New Era
In 1987, a new chapter began when De Asis moved production to Clackamas, Oregon, and renamed the company Benchmade Knife Company, Inc. The brand continued to thrive, and in 1996, it expanded to a 144,000-square-foot facility in Oregon City, Oregon, where it remains today.
The Legacy of De Asis and the Future of Benchmade
Sadly, De Asis passed away in 2020, but his legacy lives on. In a nod to tradition, his son Jon was named president and CEO of Benchmade in the same year. This marked a new era for the company, with a fresh perspective and dedication to upholding the values of innovation and excellence.
The Laro: A Testimony to the Brand’s Dedication
A great example of this legacy is the Laro knife, which nods to the iconic designs of the past. Sturdy yet light titanium handles ensure this knife will stand the test of time. As Benchmade continues to evolve, one thing remains constant: its commitment to crafting exceptional knives that please even the most discerning enthusiasts.
- Bonus fact: Did you know that Benchmade has produced over 4,000 unique knife designs, featuring a diverse range of materials and technologies?
