Unleash the Ultimate Driving Experience: 2025 BMW Z4 M40i’s Manual Gearbox Revolutionized

The Surprisingly Good BMW Manual Transmission

Last summer, BMW announced that it was ending the production of manual transmissions for its M cars, sparking a heated debate among car enthusiasts. I was one of the few who didn’t mourn the loss of the manual, citing the lackluster experience of driving a BMW with a manual transmission. But, when BMW released the 2025 Z4 M40i "Handschalter" Package, a three-pedal version of its straight-six, two-seat convertible, I decided to give it a try.

The Good Stuff

The Z4’s manual transmission still has a bit of rubbery feel, but it’s no longer a major annoyance. The clutch is much better placed than in the M2, and the car is easier to drive smoothly in traffic. While the one-two shift still feels a tad clunky, it’s no longer a deal-breaker.

The Not-So-Good Stuff

My two biggest qualms with BMW manuals have mostly been corrected, but there’s still room for improvement. The transmission could benefit from a more precise shift feel, and the car’s default setting is still a bit too aggressive.

Conclusion

Overall, the BMW manual transmission has come a long way, and the Z4 M40i "Handschalter" Package is a testament to that progress. While it’s not perfect, it’s a surprisingly good driving experience that’s worth considering for those who value the thrill of shifting gears themselves.
