Unleash the Power: RTX 5090 vs RTX 4090 – A Detailed Comparison

Unboxing Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition: A Sneak Peek at the Design

Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition is just around the corner, and we’ve managed to get our hands on one early. While this isn’t a full-fledged review, we’ll be sharing some key design differences and features that set it apart from its predecessor, the RTX 4090. Buckle up, folks!

A New Era in Packaging Design

The first thing you’ll notice is the radical change in packaging design. Gone are the large, chunky boxes of yesteryear. The RTX 5090 Founders Edition now comes in a smaller, bone-shaped gray cardboard shell, nestled within a larger brown cardboard box.

Powering Up with a New Adapter

The outer box, adorned with the inscription "Inspired by gamers. Enhanced by AI. Built by Nvidia," holds a new power adapter cable featuring an updated 12VHPWR connector. You’ll need to use either four regular PCIe eight-pin power connectors or a new 12V-2×6 cable.

Did you know? The 12V-2×6 cable is almost identical to the existing 12VHPWR, with shorter sensing pins and slightly longer conductor terminals. This means that existing 12VHPWR cables will still work seamlessly with the RTX 5090.

A Slender but Powerful Form Factor

The RTX 5090 itself is the same width and length as the RTX 4090, but its slim profile is made possible by its two-slot design. Compared to the three-slot RTX 40-series, Nvidia’s managed to shrink their latest flagship GPU into a more compact form factor.

Cooling System Redesigned from the Ground Up

The new double flow-through fan design draws cooler air from below and exhausts it above the RTX 5090, ensuring the GPU remains cool and quiet. No rear exhaust on this design, but those little air slots on either side help create an airflow boundary, preventing recirculation of warm air.

Shrinking the PCB

The PCB is now located in the middle, surrounded by heat pipes that chug in cool air from the dual fans. This allows for a smaller form factor, perfect for smaller cases. And those power connectors? Angled for easier cable management in tight spaces.

Port and I/O

At the rear, you’ll find three DisplayPort 2.1b ports and a single HDMI 2.1b port – all flipped upside down, so be prepared to adapt your cable management strategy.

The Verdict

The RTX 5090 Founders Edition boasts a refined design that is sure to please. Stay tuned for our full review, where we’ll dive into the performance and benchmarking results to compare it to the RTX 4090.
