Unleash the Freedom of Flight: DJI’s Revolutionary Foldable Drone Starts at $439
Introducing the DJI Flip: A Game-Changer in Affordable Drones
At $439, the DJI Flip is an exciting new option for those who are new to the world of drones. This innovative device can be unfolded, launched from your hand with a single button, and even land on your hand again – all while capturing high-quality photos and videos. But what really sets the Flip apart is its impressive level of performance, with camera abilities that surpass those of its competitors at a fraction of the cost.
A New Era in Drone Technology
In August, my colleague Thomas Ricker reviewed the Hover, a $349 flying camera that doesn’t require users to learn joysticks. The DJI Neo, released shortly after, looked like it would give DJI a big advantage in this space. However, the Flip not only lets you launch and film basic dronies, orbits, and follow-me shots from the drone itself, but also dramatically improves camera quality, flight stability, and battery life (31 minutes quoted).
Unparalleled Design and Features
Not only does the Flip look like a Star Wars-inspired AT-AT walker or a penny-farthing bicycle when folded, but it’s also the first DJI drone to automatically power on when you unfold it, saving two button presses. When you flip out each of its four spoke-filled full-coverage propeller guards – a first for DJI’s folding drones – they join an auto-braking, forward-facing 3D infrared sensor to protect the camera from front impacts.
Impressive Camera Capabilities
While the camera isn’t quite as impressive as the 1.0-inch type found on the Osmo Pocket 3, I was impressed by my first results in good light. The smaller 1/1.3-inch 4K60 sensor with a 4:3 aspect ratio is capable of taking 2.7K vertical video or 48-megapixel stills behind a fast f/1.7 aperture lens. Check out the following photos to get an idea of what’s possible:

Comparing to Other Options
While the DJI Neo – which costs less than half as much – can’t come close to this level of performance, the Flip is a significant step up. The Flip’s three-axis gimbal helps maintain stability, and pros can record in 10-bit D-Log M.
Is the DJI Flip the Right Choice for You?
While the Flip is an excellent option for beginners, it’s worth noting that pricier DJI drones, like the Mini 5, may offer even better performance. Ultimately, the choice between these options will depend on your specific needs and preferences.
Availability and Pricing
The DJI Flip is available to buy and ship today from DJI’s website, with a basic RC-N3 joystick controller and phone control. A $779 kit comes with three batteries, a carrying case, and a more capable DJI RC 2 controller with a built-in 700-nit screen. The DJI Mini 4 Pro versions of each kit cost $959 and $1,099, respectively, a $320 difference.
Conclusion
The DJI Flip is a game-changer in the world of affordable drones, offering impressive camera capabilities, ease of use, and a range of features at an unbeatable price point. Whether you’re new to the world of drones or looking for a reliable and easy-to-use option, the DJI Flip is definitely worth considering.
