Unleash High-Speed Thrills with the Thrustmaster T300RS GT Edition Racing Wheel Review

Thrustmaster T300RS GT Edition: A Review
The Thrustmaster T300RS GT Edition is a belt-driven racing wheel designed for PlayStation and PC. With a price tag of $449.99 / £379.99 (about AU$725), it’s clear that this is a premium product. But is it worth the investment?
Design and Build
The first thing you’ll notice about the T300RS GT Edition is its rather plain design. It’s not the most aesthetically pleasing wheel on the market, but the leatherette material adds a touch of class. The pedals also feel durable and feature plenty of adjustments. However, the base can slide around on smooth flooring, so it’s best to use it on a rug or carpet.
Installation and Setup
Installing the wheel base can be a bit of a hassle, thanks to the stiff fastening screw. You’ll need to apply some lubrication to make it easier to install. The clamping mechanism is also a bit clunky, and it can be prone to moving out of position while installing. Once installed, you’ll need to go through a self-calibration procedure that takes place as soon as you power it on.
Performance
The T300RS GT Edition performs well in certain areas, but not so well in others. The steering is precise enough, and the pedals offer enough resistance without being too hard. There’s an optional conical stop you can install behind the brake pedal to lend a different sense of feedback, but I found this limited travel too much.
Button and Paddle Controls
The wheel comes with a good selection of buttons, which is great for PlayStation users. However, the paddles aren’t damped well enough, feeling a bit harsh in use. On PC, some buttons failed to work in my experience, although it’s unclear where the blame lies.
Price and Availability
The T300RS GT Edition costs $449.99 / £379.99 (about AU$725) and is available now in one colorway. It comes with a pedal set but not an external shifter, although one can be connected.
Should You Buy It?
The T300RS GT Edition is a solid choice for racing sim enthusiasts, but it’s not without its flaws. If you’re looking for a more affordable option, you might want to consider the Thrustmaster T248, which is a better value for its price. However, if you’re willing to invest in a premium product, the T300RS GT Edition is a great choice.
Alternatives to Consider
- Thrustmaster T-GT II: A more expensive option with a detachable wheel and three-pedal base.
- Thrustmaster T248: A more affordable option with a three-pedal base and USB-A connectivity.
How I Tested the Thrustmaster T300RS GT Edition
I tested the T300RS GT Edition for about a week, during which time I used it on PC and PS5. I installed it myself and made sure to adjust as many hardware and software settings as possible. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to test the T300RS GT Edition with an external shifter.
Verdict
The Thrustmaster T300RS GT Edition is a solid choice for racing sim enthusiasts, but it’s not without its flaws. While it performs well in certain areas, it’s also quite expensive. If you’re looking for a more affordable option, you might want to consider the Thrustmaster T248. However, if you’re willing to invest in a premium product, the T300RS GT Edition is a great choice.
