Unleash Double the Power: Kia’s PHEVs to Soar with 60-Mile Electric Range
Kia Aims to Double PHEV Range to 60 Miles, Revolutionizing Electric Vehicle Adoption
When it comes to making headlines, Kia is no stranger to sparking controversy. This time, they’re shifting focus to a crucial aspect of electric vehicle (EV) adoption: range. In an effort to boost their plug-in hybrid (PHEV) range, Kia is setting its sights on doubling the distance their vehicles can travel in electric mode, targeting a whopping 60 miles.
The State of PHEVs: Where Are We Now?
Currently, many PHEVs in the US, such as the Toyota Prius Prime and RAV4 Prime, can deliver an impressive 42 and 45 miles of electric range, respectively. However, Kia’s models are close to the PHEV average, with the Kia EX and Sportage PHEVs delivering 33 and 34 miles of electric range, respectively.
The Push for 60 Miles: What’s Behind the Magic Number?
To achieve this ambitious goal, Kia is relying on continued improvements in battery capacity and upcoming vehicle platforms. According to Kia America COO Steven Center, the target range is derived from data on the average daily driving distances for Americans, including daily commuting and road trips.
What’s the Impact on the PHEV Market?
While some manufacturers already offer PHEVs with much longer ranges, these models are mostly available in Europe and tend to be pricier. For instance, the Mercedes-Benz E300e Urban edition delivers 67 miles for around $80,000, while the Range Rover PHEV offers 73 miles for a hefty $145,000.
What’s Next for Kia’s PHEVs?
While Center didn’t specify which PHEV models would first benefit from the 60-mile range capacity, clues may come from Kia’s shift in strategy. The automaker wants to offer more hybrids and more affordable models, starting with the 2025 Kia Niro Hybrid, priced at $28,365, and the PHEV model, starting at $35,865 with an electric range of around 33 miles.
The Future of PHEVs: Setting the Bar Higher
With Kia’s ambition to push the boundaries of PHEV range, the electric vehicle landscape is poised to change. As consumers continue to prioritize affordability and practicality, PHEVs may become the most viable option for those looking to transition from traditional gas-powered vehicles. Kia’s move could revolutionize the market, making PHEVs more accessible and appealing to a wider audience.
