United Airlines Accelerates Starlink Wi-Fi Rollout for Its Fleet

United Airlines is revving up its Starlink Wi-Fi rollout, promising to bring faster, more reliable internet to all its planes by the end of 2025. The airline has already started testing the service, with the first commercial flight expected to take off in the spring.

A New Era of In-Flight Connectivity

United’s current Wi-Fi solution varies in quality and isn’t free. But with Starlink, the airline is aiming to create a seamless, high-speed internet experience for its passengers. "We’re kind of enabling the living room in the sky experience," said Grant Milstead, United’s Vice President of Digital Technology.

What to Expect

Here are some key highlights of United’s Starlink Wi-Fi rollout:

  • Free Wi-Fi for all Mileage Plus members: United’s loyalty program members will enjoy free, fast, and reliable Wi-Fi on all flights.
  • Regional fleet to get Starlink by the end of 2025: United’s entire regional fleet of planes will be equipped with Starlink Wi-Fi by the end of next year.
  • Mainline planes to get faster internet: At least one mainline plane will offer faster internet by the end of 2025, with the goal of eventually installing Starlink on all mainline aircraft.
  • New interface and sign-in process: Passengers will need to sign in with their Mileage Plus account or sign up before or during the flight to access the new Wi-Fi service.
  • Connected seatback screens: United is also rolling out seatback screens to all mainline aircraft, which will be integrated with the Starlink Wi-Fi service.

Why Starlink?

United chose Starlink for its robust network, extensive satellite coverage, and ability to grow with the airline. "We extensively vetted their capability, and they have the biggest network," said Milstead.

The Future of In-Flight Connectivity

United’s Starlink Wi-Fi rollout is just the beginning of its efforts to revolutionize in-flight connectivity. The airline is focused on innovating in this space, and passengers can expect a seamless, high-speed internet experience that will make flying feel more like being at home.
