Underwhelming Experience: Black Ops 6 Beta Falls Flat in Latest Call of Duty Installment
So, I just spent the weekend playing the Black Ops 6 beta, and I’m still trying to figure out what’s going on. When Treyarch first announced Omnimovement, the new feature that lets you sprint in any direction, I was excited. I mean, who doesn’t love the idea of being able to Max Payne dive over every table and off suspended platforms? But, as it turns out, it’s not as revolutionary as I thought it’d be. I mean, it’s fine, but it’s just… fine. We all still played CoD the same way we always do – sprinting, sliding, and occasionally hopping around a corner. The freedom of movement is empowering, but the fundamentals of Call of Duty remain the same.
And then there’s the gunplay. I was really curious to see how Treyarch’s take on the Modern Warfare engine would feel. As expected, it’s an easy transition. Black Ops 6 feels similar to Modern Warfare 3, which is probably for the best. But, there are still some Treyarch quirks that I don’t like. The gun audio always sounds like a marble rattling around a tin can, and the hit marker noise is just loud and annoying.
As for Create-a-Class, I’m just not feeling it. The build crafting system is easy to use, but it’s just so… basic. There’s no real strategy involved, and it feels like everything I throw on is just a definite upgrade. I mean, I like how it speeds up gunsmithing, but I just wish I cared about what those attachments are doing. For the gun I leveled up the highest, the XM4, it seemed like the game only gave me two options: make it a laser beam or make it pretty OK at hipfire.
I’m keeping my mind open for the second weekend of the beta, though. That starts tomorrow, and it’ll have a bigger map and mode pool than the first weekend. Maybe then I’ll find something that gets me excited about Black Ops 6.
