Switch 2 Doesn’t Have To Get Here Soon, Tomb Raider Publisher Says
Amazon Games boss Christoph Hartmann has said his company will “obviously” develop games for the Switch 2, but he isn’t too stressed about when the new system releases. Amazon Games is publishing the next Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics and is also producing a new Lord of the Rings MMO, among other upcoming games.
Speaking to IGN, Hartmann said, “We obviously plan to develop games for it and I can’t wait for it to be out.” At the same time, the executive said he would rather Nintendo “wait a year and get it perfect” rather than ship the system as quickly as possible “and then we all complain about what doesn’t work.”
“Switch has been such a fantastic product, I can wait another year if I have to. And from development, I think most non-Nintendo developers are not exclusively doing titles for the Switch. They’re always part of a portfolio mix of platform mix. Just wait,” he said.
Nintendo will announce the successor the Switch before April 1, 2025. For context, Nintendo first acknowledged it was making a new console–then known as NX–in March 2015 before releasing it two years later.
The Switch is closing in on the PS2’s record for all-time console sales of 155 million. It’s the best selling of all the new consoles on the market, exceeding the sales of PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The Switch 2, or whatever the system ends up being called, could help the video game industry rebound in 2025, while the launch of GTA VI in 2025 is also expected to be a big deal to help turn things around.
Hartmann, a former executive at 2K Games, also recently discussed the role of artificial intelligence in game development. He said Amazon Games is not too bothered by the ongoing actor strike because “we don’t really have acting…”
Amazon Games just recently announced a new game, King of Meat, during Gamescom.
