Spyderco’s New Pocket Knives Come with a Rarely Seen Super Steel

Like all Sprint Runs, the latest one comes with a unique colorway exclusive to the limited-edition knives. In this case, that’s a deep shade of burgundy that leans closer to purple than red and pairs exceptionally well with a black coating on the blade and hardware. But what’s truly special here is Spyderco’s choice of steel.

All seven models boast what’s known as Micro-Melt PD#1, an air-hardening tool steel from Carpenter Technology that’s composed of carbon, chromium, molybdenum, vanadium and tungsten.

As such, it shares the same balanced profile of CPM CruWear, common within the knife industry and renowned for its combination of toughness and edge retention, with some corrosion-resistant properties, to boot — all present on Micro-Melt PD#1.

An EDC workhorse

This new Sprint Run isn’t the first time Spyderco has used the steel. Micro-Melt PD#1 also featured in a one-off Mule Team blade, which the company sold without a handle. However, it’s much rarer than CruWear, despite the steels’ similarities in performance.
