Smartphone Sales Experience a 7% Growth in 2024
The global smartphone market has finally shown signs of recovery, with a 7% growth in sales in 2024 compared to the previous year. According to the latest report from Canalys, the market reached a staggering 1.22 billion units sold, marking a rebound after two consecutive years of decline.
Apple and Samsung Lead the Pack
Apple and Samsung were neck and neck in the lead, each accounting for 18% of the market share. Xiaomi followed closely behind with 14%, while Transsion, Oppo, vivo, Honor, and Lenovo all had a significant presence with 5% each. Huawei and Realme, on the other hand, managed to grab 4% of the market share.
Emerging Markets Drive Growth
Apple’s performance was driven by emerging market growth and stable performances in North America and Europe. Xiaomi, on the other hand, was fueled by strong momentum in Mainland China and continued strategic expansion into emerging markets.
Breaking Down the Numbers
Apple sold 225.9 million iPhones in 2024, a 1% decline from the previous year. Samsung sold 222.9 million Galaxy smartphones, also down by 1%. Xiaomi, however, managed to grow 15% with 168.6 million units sold. Transsion and Oppo (including OnePlus) also saw significant growth, with 106.7 million and 103.6 million units sold, respectively.
Regional Performance
Mainland China saw a 4% growth in smartphone sales, while North America grew by 1%. Europe, on the other hand, experienced a 3% increase. The fourth quarter of 2024 saw Apple lead the market with 77.1 million shipments and 23% market share, followed closely by Samsung with 51.9 million units and 16% share.
