Skins Rarer and More Coveted: What’s Behind League of Legends’ Shift to Fewer Freebies

A Check-in on the Current Season of League of Legends: Monetization Woes and More

In a recent video, Riot Games provided a “check-in” on the current season of League of Legends, addressing concerns around monetization, season format, and more. The video features Head of League Studio Andrei Van Roon and Executive Producer Paul Bellezza, highlighting the current season’s changes and future plans.

New Season Format and Hextech Chests: A Controversial Topic

The video begins with a discussion on the current season’s format, which has undergone a significant change to focus more on lore. The team also delved into the topic of Hextech Chests, a feature that was met with controversy due to its gacha mechanics and feelings of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). As a result, Riot decided to quietly remove Hextech Chests, leaving fans concerned.

A Change in Tack: Battle Passes to the Rescue

To make up for the loss of Hextech Chests, Riot is focusing on improving Battle Passes. The plan is to add distinct visual effects and model changes to Battle Pass skins, making them feel like a more valuable reward. While these changes won’t be implemented in the upcoming Season 1, Act 2 patch, they’re expected to be part of the Season 2 update.

Season 1: The Noxus Empire

The current season of League of Legends is set in the brutal and expansionist empire of Noxus, with a secret magical illuminati lurking in the shadows. Fans have responded positively to the increased lore elements and in-game events, such as the Ball of the Black Rose. Act 2 will bring more Noxus content, including the return of the Arena game mode.

Arena Game Mode 2.0

A new Arena map will take place in the Reckoning Pits of Noxus, where prisoners and gladiators fight for glory. Players who consistently participate in Arena will earn Fame, a new ranking system, and famous Reckoners will make cameo appearances throughout matches.

Season 2: A Palate Cleanser

After the conclusion of the Noxian season, Season 2 is expected to be a “palate cleanser” with a lighter, more lighthearted theme. This may take the series to a region like Bandle City or Bilgewater. The release date for the second half of the current Noxian season and the upcoming Season 2 remains unknown, but fans will have to wait eagerly for more information.
