Shockwaves of Uncertainty: Chrysler Halts Electric SUV Development, Orders Suppliers to Halt Spending
Chrysler Airflow: A Concept in Crisis
The Chrysler Airflow electric crossover concept was a glimpse into the brand’s future, showcasing a sleek, modern design that hinted at a bold new direction. But it seems that the project has been put on hold, and potentially even cancelled. According to sources, the STLA Large platform-based C6X(CA) program has been put on hold until further notice.
A Rocky Road for the Airflow
The Airflow wasn’t always on shaky ground. In 2023, Chrysler design boss Ralph Gilles told MotorTrend that the project had been restarted from scratch, citing a desire for a "statement" that diverged from the original concept. However, it appears that even this new direction may not be viable.
A Glaring Sign
An email obtained by Mopar Insiders appears to confirm the project’s hiatus. The email, seemingly part of a group correspondence from Stellantis to part suppliers, reads: "Dear Supplier, the C6X(CA) program has been put on hold until further notice. Therefore, any spending associated with this program should be suspended immediately."
Chrysler’s Uncertain Future
The news isn’t entirely surprising, given Stellantis’ struggles in the US market. However, it does raise questions about the brand’s future. While Chrysler CEO Christine Feuell has reassured fans that the brand is here to stay, the uncertainty surrounding the Airflow’s fate can’t help but cast a shadow over the brand’s prospects.
A Brighter Future?
Feuell has hinted at a new large SUV in the works, as well as the production-ready Chrysler Halcyon concept. These projects could be the keys to Chrysler’s resurgence, but it’s unclear where the brand’s priorities will ultimately lie.
The Halcyon Hopes
If the Airflow is indeed cancelled, the Halcyon could be the saving grace for Chrysler. This stunning four-door electric sports sedan would offer a compelling alternative to other electric flagships on the market, showcasing the brand’s commitment to innovation and design.
