Samsung’s Sleep Tracking Flop: Why the Latest Ring Model Falls Short

Samsung Galaxy Ring: Meant for Bed, But a Terrible Bedmate

The Samsung Galaxy Ring was designed to be a stylish and unobtrusive fitness tracker that doubles as a smart ring. Its small form factor makes it easy to wear while sleeping, and its seamless integration with other Samsung devices promised a convenient and streamlined sleep tracking experience. Unfortunately, my experience with the Galaxy Ring has been anything but smooth.

Disappointing Sleep Tracking Performance

I’ve been wearing the Galaxy Ring for over a month now, and I’m still not sold on keeping it in my bedtime routine. The device’s sleep tracking performance has been disappointing, to say the least. The ring’s accuracy is inconsistent, and its data often conflicts with that of other devices I’ve used.

Take a look at the chart below, which compares the sleep data recorded by the Galaxy Ring to that of other wearables I’ve used.

Inaccuracy and Flawed Sleep Data

As you can see, the Galaxy Ring’s data is all over the place. Some nights, it records close wake and bedtimes, while others, it misses middle-of-the-night wake windows altogether. I’ve even experienced complete data cutoffs at random intervals, with the ring mistakenly recording periods of inactivity as periods of sleep.

Flaws in the Sensor and Algorithm

I suspect that the ring’s sensor contact issues may be to blame for some of its inaccurate data. When I sleep, I tend to move around a lot, and this movement may be affecting the ring’s ability to accurately track my sleep. Additionally, Samsung’s sleep-tracking algorithm may not be as sophisticated as those used by other brands.

Depth and Insights

The Galaxy Ring’s sleep coaching features are also lacking compared to other wearables I’ve used. While it’s nice to have access to basic sleep data and statistics, I’m craving more in-depth insights and personalized recommendations for improving my sleep.

Conclusion

If the Galaxy Ring is to earn a permanent place in my rotation, Samsung needs to improve its sleep tracking platform overall. The ring’s primary selling point is its use as a companion device for Samsung smartwatches, and its overnight stat collection is key to its success. Until then, I’m unlikely to keep wearing it at night.
