Samsung’s Galaxy AI Premium Shift: Beyond 2025, Expect a Paywall

The Future of AI on Samsung Devices: A Paid Service?

As Samsung continues to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence (AI) on its devices, a recent footnote in the press releases for the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE, Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Plus, and Samsung Galaxy S10 Ultra has sparked concerns about the future of AI on Samsung devices. The footnote reads: "Fees may apply to certain AI features at the end of 2025." While this isn’t a definitive statement, it does suggest that the Galaxy AI experience may not remain completely free beyond the end of next year.

The Cost of AI

This isn’t a new development, as the same disclaimer was included in the information released alongside the Samsung Galaxy S24 series at the start of this year. Samsung hasn’t changed its plans for charging for AI, and it’s not surprising given the growing demand for AI-powered features.

Why the Change?

Generative artificial intelligence requires a significant amount of computing power and energy to run, making it a costly endeavor for device manufacturers. Both Google and OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, offer users more advanced features and powerful AI models for a monthly fee of $20 (about £15 / AU$29). Apple, too, is rolling out its Apple Intelligence feature, which may eventually have a price attached.

What Does This Mean for Samsung Users?

For now, you can still use the AI features on your Samsung device, including image editing, live translation, note summaries, and more, free of charge. However, if you rely heavily on these features, be aware that there may be a cost attached in the future.

What’s Next for Samsung AI?

While Samsung hasn’t disclosed which features might come with a price tag or what that price tag might be, the company has confirmed that more Galaxy AI features are on the way. It’s clear that Samsung is committed to delivering a premium AI experience, and if that means charging for certain features, so be it.

Will You Pay for AI?

Only time will tell if Samsung’s decision to charge for AI features will impact the adoption rate of its devices. As the demand for AI-powered features continues to grow, it’s likely that users will be willing to pay for the benefits that these features bring.
