Galaxy Unpacked may have come and gone, but we’re still basking in the glow of the Samsung Galaxy S25 lineup. The spotlight is shining particularly bright on the Galaxy S25 Edge, the newest addition to the three-phone lineup we’ve come to expect from Samsung.

A Phone Like No Other

The Edge designation is no longer a reference to the edge-to-edge displays of yesteryear; instead, it’s a nod to the phone’s incredible slenderness. At just what feels like an arm’s length away from your average smartphone, the S25 Edge is undeniably svelte. We’re talking thin, folks! The dual cameras on the rear panel have to rest on a raised protrusion just to fit onto the polished surface. In fact, it’s visibly thinner than the S25 Plus, its closest sibling.

Love it or Hate it

Senior News Editor Mark Wilson isn’t convinced about the S25 Edge’s design, calling it "the laziest interpretation of phone innovation." But I think it’s time to give the Edge a chance to prove itself. While I share some of my esteemed colleague’s hesitation, I believe it’s worth exploring this new take on smartphone design.

What’s the Point of Thin?

Some may wonder why Samsung is bothering with a phone this slim. Is it just about aesthetics? Actually, I think there are two key factors at play. Firstly, modern smartphones are large and somewhat heavy. It’s nice to have an option that doesn’t compromise on display size but prioritizes portability. Compare this to flagships like the iPhone 16 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, which are lighter than their predecessors but still noticeable chunky. The S25 Edge could offer a refreshing change.

Ergonomics Over Performance?

My second point is that, by focusing on ergonomics, Samsung will be free to specialize its flagships for performance. We might see a split between these two areas, leading to major gains in both. Just think back to folding phones and multitasking – while many slab devices have great displays, few prioritize this feature. Perhaps the S25 Edge is signaling a new direction for phone makers.

Get Weird, Samsung!

At the end of the day, it’s about innovation. We’re in an era of design hegemony; every phone is a rounded rectangle with a great display, cameras, and battery. The S25 Edge reminds me of the original Oppo Find X or the swivel-screened LG Wing – weird, but exciting. Samsung’s willingness to try something different earns them a pass in my book.

What’s Next for the S25 Edge?

The S25 Edge might not be perfect just yet, but with enough consumer support, I think it could pave the way for new innovations in the smartphone market. We’ll have to wait and see if it finds a place among our list of the best Samsung phones.
