Roblox to Boost Revenue Share for Creators of Paid Games on Its Platform
Roblox is racing towards its ambitious goal of reaching 1 billion users, and the company is getting creative in sharing the revenue with the developers who’ve created a staggering 2 million+ games on the platform. At the company’s annual developer conference in San Francisco, CEO David Baszucki revealed that game creators can now keep a whopping 50-70% of revenue from their paid titles sold on desktop computers – a significant boost from the standard 30% cut Roblox usually takes for in-game purchases.
This new revenue share model is designed to incentivize the creation of more premium games, which will help attract an older user base to the platform. Baszucki envisions this expansion to extend to paid experiences on other devices, like mobile phones and consoles, although he didn’t elaborate on how app store fees would be handled on iOS and Android.
Another initiative aimed at supporting creators is a new affiliate link program. Developers who participate will earn up to 50% of Robux purchases made by new users within six months of signing up – a potential goldmine for popular creators. According to Baszucki, this program will encourage creators to heavily promote the platform, fostering a stronger community.
The company also showcased its new “Party” mode, which allows up to six players to communicate and seamlessly transition between experiences. Early next year, Roblox will partner with Shopify, enabling developers to sell real-world items directly through the platform.
While Roblox’s daily user base has continued to grow, the company has faced criticism over its handling of pedophile activity on the platform. A recent investigation by Bloomberg highlighted the issue, prompting Turkey to ban Roblox, citing virtual sex parties and violent games played by children. Roblox has appealed the ban and claims to be working with Turkish authorities to address the concerns.
Despite the controversy, Baszucki emphasizes the company’s commitment to trust and safety, citing improvements in AI-powered moderation and human review. With these initiatives in place, Roblox aims to not only increase its user base but also strengthen its community and developer relationships.
