Revolutionizing Sports with Technology: Toyota’s Record-Breaking Robot Aims for the Hoop

Toyota’s CUE: The Rise of a Robot Basketball Phenom

Toyota, the automaker that can’t seem to get enough of innovation, is on a roll. Their CUE project, a humanoid robot with a passion for basketball, has just broken two Guinness World Records and is showing no signs of stopping. In 2017, a team of nine Toyota engineers volunteered for the CUE project, an AI-learning robot designed to play basketball. Fast forward to today, and CUE has evolved into CUE6, a 6’10" tall, 280-pound powerful robot with a taste for victory.

From Lego Bricks to Championship Form

CUE’s early days were marked by experimentation with basic components and Lego bricks, but it wasn’t long before it began to develop its own unique style. The robot’s ability to pick up the ball independently and move around on its own was a major breakthrough, allowing it to dribble and shoot with remarkable accuracy. But it was the CUE team’s innovative approach to shooting that ultimately earned it a world record for the farthest basketball shot by a humanoid robot, at an impressive 24.55 meters (80 ft 6 in).

A Record-Breaking Shot

Aiming for the same world record held by human, Joshua Walker, CUE6 went head-to-head against the best of them. And though it missed on its first try, it didn’t take long for the robot to redeem itself. On its second attempt, CUE6 banked the ball off the rim and into the net, securing its place in the record books.

The Future of Basketball

So, what’s next for CUE? The mind behind the project, Tomohiro Nomi, wants to take things to the next level. He’s dreaming of creating a robot that can dunk like Michael Jordan, and who knows, maybe even defy gravity. With the pace of innovation the CUE team has shown, we might just see a robot basketball player before we get to enjoy Grand Theft Auto VI.

The CUE Legacy

For now, CUE6 has set its sights on the next Guinness World Record: dunking. Will it be the first robot to achieve this feat? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for certain – CUE has already made its mark on the world of basketball. And we can’t help but wonder what other surprises this robot has in store for us.
