The End of a Monopoly: EU Now Allows USB-C Charging for Mobile Devices
The European Union has a reputation for being tough on monopolies, but it seems they’re willing to turn a blind eye when it comes to convenience. As the new year begins, certain mobile devices will now be allowed to be sold in the EU with a USB-C port and requisite cable.
A Year-Long Transition
This change has been a long time coming, with the European Union agreeing to enforce a common charger standard for mobile devices in October 2022. The rule came into effect on December 28, 2022, for mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, video game consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, and earbuds sold in the EU. Laptops, on the other hand, have a bit more time to comply, with a deadline of April 2026.
Reducing e-Waste and Saving Money
The EU is reportedly ridding the world of 11,000 tonnes of e-waste annually and saving EU residents a whopping 250 million Euros per year on replacement chargers. Interoperability is the driving force behind this move, which has even convinced Apple to ditch its Lightning standard in favor of USB-C.
The Shift to USB-C
Apple has been gradually transitioning to USB-C for some time now. In fact, the company recently removed the iPhone 14 range from sale in the EU to comply with the new regulations. It’s no secret that Apple has been shifting its products to USB-C, with MacBooks, AirPods, iPhones, and iPads now all charging via USB-C.

The EU’s press release echoes these sentiments: "Are you tired of rummaging through your drawer to find the right charger for your phone? The EU has got you covered! Because the EU has standardised charging ports for mobile phones and other portable electronic devices, all new devices sold in the EU must now support USB-C charging. This will reduce the number of chargers you need to buy, help minimize electronic waste, and simplify your everyday life."
The End of a Monopoly
This regulation effectively means the death of the idea that a manufacturer could introduce a new charging standard that upsets the apple cart, so to speak. It also paves the way for more collaboration across the board when it comes to the next standard. For now, it seems USB-C has plenty of legs left in it. Now, if only planes, coffee shops, and everywhere in between would follow suit!
