Revolutionize Offshore Construction with Komatsu’s Electrifying Next-Gen Underwater Bulldozer

The Future of Bulldozers: An Inside Look at Komatsu’s Revolutionary Underwater Equipment

At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, it was clear that the future of technology was not just about big screens and big AI, but also about big bulldozers – specifically, ones that can operate underwater.

Enter Komatsu, a century-old global manufacturer of heavy equipment, which made a splash with its next-generation amphibious bulldozer at the tech show. Marking its first-ever appearance at CES, the company unveiled a fully functional, all-electric autonomous prototype that’s got everyone talking.

Meet the Underwater Electric Bulldozer

With a battery capacity of 450 kWh and a four-hour charging time, this behemoth has the potential to dive to depths of up to 50 meters (164 ft). That’s a significant upgrade from its current capabilities, which were limited to just seven meters (23 ft) due to GPS limitations.

So, why do we need bulldozers underwater, you might ask? Well, for the past 50-plus years, the answer has been yes. Komatsu originally introduced its first underwater bulldozer in 1970, and the D155W went into mass production the following year as the world’s first amphibious bulldozer. Today, it has been utilized at over 1,200 project sites throughout Japan.

Real-World Applications

The underwater bulldozer has been deployed for various tasks, including:

  • Coastal build projects to mitigate storm surge damage
  • River dredging to support harbor navigation and minimize flooding
  • Ecosystem restoration efforts

The Team Behind the Technology

According to Shuu Komatsu, team manager of the Komatsu Hydraulic Excavator-Bulldozer Development Group, the project was an extraordinary challenge. "I think it’s amazing that our predecessors at Komatsu developed this more than 50 years ago, and it’s still in service. I don’t think there’s any other construction equipment like it."

Next Steps

Komatsu and Asunaro Aoki Construction will showcase the next-gen underwater bulldozer at Expo 2025, which will be held in Osaka from April to October. This revolutionary technology has the potential to transform the construction industry, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.
