Revolutionary Electric Ram 1500 Long-Range Trim Cuts Short with Discontinued 500-Mile Model

Stellantis Halts Electric SUV Development, Asks Suppliers to Stop Spending

Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, and Jeep, is facing a crisis. As sales slow down, the company is making the tough decision to cut costs by sidelining various programs. The latest victim is the long-range electric variant of the Ram 1500 REV, which was originally expected to boast a 229-kWh battery pack.

Canceling New Models: A Bad Strategy?

In an email to suppliers, Stellantis announced the cancellation of the long-range electric variant of the Ram 1500 REV. The message from suppliers highlights the company’s focus on the launch of the Ram 1500 Ramcharger and Ram 1500 REV (BEV L) models, stating that work on the long-range variant should cease immediately. This decision raises questions about Stellantis’ strategy, especially considering its dealers are calling for more products.

The Ramcharger Takes Center Stage

It seems premature electrification has hit another hurdle. We can’t help but wonder if this move is related to Stellantis’ earlier warning about the dangers of "premature electrification." With the company having spent billions, there’s little to show for it, while other companies that entered the market later have gained valuable experience and expertise.

A Changing Automotive Landscape

The current market climate is no stranger to change. With EV sales up 7% in 2024, the notion that the EV transition has been canceled is, to say the least, exaggerated. However, the public has grown hostile toward expensive vehicles, and electrifying them doesn’t alleviate the issue. Trucks, in particular, are already costly, and their electrification doesn’t make them more affordable. Ford had to sideline F-150 Lightning production in October, despite a 40% sales increase in 2023.

The Future of Electric Vehicles

Technically, nothing prevents Ram from revisiting the long-range electric variant in the future. For now, buyers will have to settle for the standard model’s 350-mile projected range. Stellantis has made some tough decisions recently, and it’s unclear what other cuts are coming. Here’s hoping 2025 will be a comeback year for the company.
