Rethinking Android’s Haunted Past: Should Android Return to ‘.1’ Releases for Simplification?

Android 15: A New Era of Confusion?

The recent release of Android 15 has left many questioning whether updates are getting too confusing. Let’s break down the pros and cons of Google’s current strategy.

The Good:

  • For developers and apps, QPR releases are a blessing in disguise. With no API bumps, there’s less work needed, reducing the risk of overwhelming updates.
  • Android’s lack of obvious fragmentation is a silver lining. No more "15.1," "15.2," and so on, making it easier for OEMs to follow.

The Bad:

  • Confusion reigns supreme! Trying to figure out which features are available where can be a nightmare, unless you’re paying close attention or checking in-depth breakdowns.
  • Android updates lack clear separation, making it difficult to determine which release is which. A simple marker for each QPR update would greatly help.

The Future?

  • Could a clear designation in the Settings menu make a difference? It would be easier to understand which features are tied to specific updates.
  • Is a simple "Android 15.1" solution desirable, like on iOS? Although unlikely, a better solution would make understanding system features and availability more straightforward.
