Resistance 4 Concept Pitched by Insomniac Games, But Sony Declined

The Resistance Series: A Look Back at Its Fascinating History
It’s been over 14 years since the last mainline entry in the Resistance series, a fondly remembered alternate history shooter from Insomniac Games. While the series may be on hold, it’s interesting to know that a potential Resistance 4 was almost in the works. In a recent interview with Kinda Funny Gamescast, outgoing Insomniac boss, Ted Price, shared the story of how a Resistance 4 came close to being developed.
A Concept Born from Passion
According to Price, the concept for Resistance 4 was born from a passion project among the Insomniac team members. They spent a significant amount of time brainstorming and developing the story, building upon the alternate history base established in the previous games. "It was a wonderful concept… I do believe that Resistance has set up a really cool alternate history base where anything can happen with the Chimera and where they go and what their origins are," Price shared.
Sony’s Decision
Unfortunately, Sony ultimately decided against moving forward with the project, citing "timing and market opportunity" as the reason. This might have been due to the timing, as Insomniac had previously revealed that they were "not slated" to develop a Resistance 4. Despite this, Price is still hopeful for the series’ future, admitting that he’d love to see a Resistance revival. "It’s near and dear to my heart," he said.
A Philosophical Approach
When asked about the studio’s decision to move on from Resistance, Price took a philosophical approach. "I do strongly believe that there’s a reason everything happens, and when I look back at the games that we’ve made – the ones that were received well, the ones that weren’t received well, the ones we didn’t get to make – all of those have led us to where we are today," he said.
The Future of Insomniac
Insomniac’s next project is Wolverine, which was teased back in 2021 and is still without a release window. While there’s been no word on a Resistance revival, Price remains grateful for the opportunity to revisit the series in the future. "We will always have that opportunity to revisit Resistance, which is an amazing feeling to have, being part of Sony and owning the intellectual property."
