Relic Entertainment Outlines Its Future Plans as an Independent Studio

After parting ways with Sega last year, Relic Entertainment, the studio behind iconic titles like Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, has outlined its vision for the future. As an independent studio, Relic is shifting its focus towards smaller, in-house games and re-imagining classic titles.

A New Era for Relic Entertainment

Founded in 1997, Relic Entertainment has built a reputation for its work in the real-time strategy genre. The studio’s acquisition by Sega in 2013 marked a significant change, but the companies’ decision to part ways last year has given Relic the opportunity to re-establish itself as an independent entity.

Downsizing and Rebuilding

Following the separation from Sega, Relic underwent a period of downsizing, laying off 41 staff members in 2023. However, the studio is now poised to refocus its efforts on three key areas: developing smaller-scope, in-house games; re-imagining classic titles; and providing robust support for its existing titles.

Smaller-Scope Games and Classic Re-Imaginings

Relic plans to actively pursue the development of smaller-scope, in-house games, allowing the studio to explore new genres and gameplay experiences. This shift in focus will also see Relic re-imagine classic titles through re-releases, remasters, and brand-new franchise experiences that capture the spirit of the originals while appealing to a new generation of players.

Company of Heroes 3 and Beyond

Relic’s existing titles, including Company of Heroes 3, will also receive a deeper commitment and robust support. The studio has already announced a new update and new DLC for Company of Heroes 3, featuring four new Battlegroups for multiplayer and co-op/skirmish vs. AI.
