According to a recent Consumer Reports (CR) survey, many hybrid vehicles stand out as the most reliable vehicles available. In fact, as a category, hybrids are now considered as reliable as non-hybrid gas cars. This is no small feat, considering the added complexity of hybrid powertrains.

So, what’s behind this shift towards hybrid vehicles? For one, automakers have listened to consumer demands and have worked tirelessly to improve the quality and reliability of hybrids. CR’s survey gathered data from over 300,000 vehicle owners of the 2022 to 2024 model years, covering 20 potential problem areas – from engines to infotainment systems. The results speak for themselves: today’s hybrids deliver reliability that’s on par with conventional gas cars.

And it’s not just about reliability – hybrids are often quieter, quicker, and more pleasant to drive than their gasoline-only counterparts, making them a compelling choice for drivers.

So, which hybrids are worth considering? CR’s top recommendations include models from Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Lexus, and Toyota, all of which have earned top reliability scores across multiple categories.

But what about fully electric vehicles, or EVs? While they have made significant strides in terms of reliability, with 42% fewer problems reported in CR’s recent survey compared to last year, they still have a way to go. For some, the added complexity of EVs – including the need to search for available charging stations – might make hybrids a more appealing option.
