RCS Status Indicator Update: Google Messages Revamps Indicators for RCS Message
Google Messages is testing a small change to its RCS conversation indicator. Right now, the text field says either “Text message” or “RCS message,” with the latter being “Chat” before a name change in early 2023. The other main indicator is the end-to-end encryption lock icon.
The app is now testing a change where the indicator says “(RCS)” for some Messages users, while it becomes “(Text)” for SMS/MMS conversations. This is a bit of a departure from the usual indicators, but it’s shorter and more concise. On the other hand, the parentheses might look a bit unwieldy, and could probably be removed to simplify things further.
This change is not yet widely rolled out, with only two reports of it so far. It follows another tweak to Google Messages in recent weeks that made the send button more colorful.
Google Messages is always evolving, and it’s interesting to see how the app continues to change and improve. Whether you’re a fan of the new indicator or not, it’s clear that Google is committed to making its messaging app the best it can be.
