Powerfully towing 5,000 pounds with a Toyota Prius: Uncovering the surprising towing capabilities of a hybrid vehicle
Towing an Entire Car behind a Toyota Prius: Madness or Masterful Genius?
It’s only a matter of time before a determined individual thinks they can achieve the impossible and defy all safety protocols. Say hello to Brandon Youngstrom and his hybrid enthusiast brainchild. Youngstrom hatched a crazy idea: load his Toyota Prius onto the trailer and take it for a spin. Let’s see why.
Underlying Challenges: Towing at Sub-Standard Power
He attached a receiver hitch to the rear of the 270,000-mile second-gen Prius and linked it to a towable 4,800-pound car trailer, all while upgrading his silver bullet’s suspension for additional ground clearance. Now, for a stunt this ambitious to be possible at all, two significant challenges remain. First, Youngstrom has a meager 1.5-liter hybrid four-cylinder providing the bulk of the grunt (76 horsepower to be exact); the stock system might not exactly burst with adrenaline when needed most. Second, those hybrid battery drain woes we mentioned? Guess which mode was heavily used after carrying such excess load.
Fasten your seatbelts folks – things may not get even smoother!
