Outdated Apple Watch Series 4: What’s Next for This Vintage Tech Gadget
Apple Watch Series 4 Joins the Ranks of Vintage Products
The tech world is constantly evolving, and Apple is no exception. The company has recently updated its list of vintage and obsolete products, and the iconic Apple Watch Series 4 has made its way onto the list.
A New Era for the Apple Watch Series 4
As of now, all variants of the Apple Watch Series 4 are considered “vintage” worldwide. This includes the aluminum and stainless steel versions in both 40mm and 44mm sizes. The Apple Watch Series 4 was first introduced in September 2018, and its major redesign featured a larger display, thinner bezels, and rounder corners.
What Does “Vintage” Mean for Apple Products?
Apple considers products to be “vintage” when they have been out of distribution for more than five years. When a product has not been in distribution for more than seven years, it becomes obsolete. Vintage products are still eligible for repairs if parts are available, but obsolete products are not eligible for repair.
Other Products Join the List of Vintage and Obsolete Products
The 2019 15-inch MacBook Pro has also been added to the list of vintage products. This model was the last 15-inch MacBook Pro released by Apple, but it can still run the latest version of macOS. In contrast, the Apple Watch Series 4 did not receive a watchOS update this year and its last major update was watchOS 10.
A Look Back at Previous Additions to the List
Last July, the iPhone X, OG AirPods, and OG HomePod were added to the list of vintage products. Right now, obsolete products include the iPhone 6s and older. This means that service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products, making them difficult to repair.
What’s Next for Apple Watch Series 4 Owners?
It seems that if you’re currently rocking the Apple Watch Series 4, you may be due for an upgrade soon. Apple ensures that people are aware of the phones and wearables, even Macs, that are repairable for years to come. This transparency is a testament to the company’s commitment to its customers and the environment.
