Microsoft Brings DeepSeek R1 to Copilot+: On-Device Power and Security
Microsoft has recently announced that its Copilot+ machines will be getting a special treat – an on-device version of the innovative DeepSeek R1 model. This AI, developed by DeepSeek, has been making waves in the AI world with its impressive capabilities at a lower cost and increased power efficiency.
DeepSeek R1 has been dubbed a game-changer, boasting an LLM that’s surprisingly cheaper to train, more powerful, and yet equally intelligent as its rivals. While others like Meta, Google, and Open AI are busy trying to uncover the secrets behind DeepSeek’s success, Microsoft has taken a different approach.
What does this mean for Copilot+ users?
The on-device version of DeepSeek R1 will be initially available on Qualcomm Snapdragon X machines, followed by Intel Core Ultra 200V laptops and AMD AI chipsets. This exciting development will not only bring impressive AI capabilities to Copilot+ users but also alleviate concerns about data security, as the data will be processed locally.
To get started, you’ll need to sign up for an Azure account (if you don’t already have one) and navigate to Azure AI Foundry, where you can search for and deploy DeepSeek R1.
How does it work?
Once installed, you can start chatting away with DeepSeek on-device in the Chat Playground. One of the unique benefits of DeepSeek is that it shows you its "thinking" process as it develops its responses, allowing for more precise refinement of prompts. This transparency will help you tweak your prompts and achieve your desired outcomes more effectively.
Unlocking the Power of DeepSeek R1
As the 7B and 14B variants become available, you’ll see DeepSeek R1’s Azure model continue to improve. However, Microsoft has warned that if it discovers that DeepSeek was indeed copied from ChatGPT, they may remove the AI from Azure, potentially impacting its availability globally.
In the meantime, what can you do?
Sign up for an Azure account and get started with DeepSeek R1 as soon as possible. With this on-device version, you’ll be able to experience the benefits of DeepSeek R1, including its innovative AI capabilities, transparency, and security.
