Microsoft Fumbles Windows 11 Recall, Struggling to Fix Peculiar Bug Crushing Key Functionality
Windows 11 Recall Bug: A Pain for Early Testers
For some Windows 11 testers, the much-anticipated Recall feature has been a source of frustration rather than excitement. The issue? Recall just doesn’t work at all for these users, and Microsoft has identified the culprit: an optional update gone awry.
As Recall finally launched for Windows Insiders in the Dev channel, some users encountered a baffling problem – the feature refused to save any snapshots, crucial for its AI-powered search capabilities. Microsoft has since revealed that the issue arises when installing patch KB5046740, the November preview update, before joining the Dev channel with build 26120.2415.
Unfortunately, the workaround isn’t straightforward. Microsoft advises avoiding the optional update until a future fix is released, effectively leaving users in the dark on how to resolve the problem.
What’s the issue?
The bug is a result of the optional update colliding with the Dev channel build, throwing a major wrench in Recall’s works. This leaves early adopters of the feature, mostly using Arm-based Snapdragon devices, in a pickle.
If you’re already in this predicament…
Too bad, so sad. It appears there’s no easy fix for those who have already installed the preview update before joining the Dev channel. Microsoft remains tight-lipped on what to do, leaving users to either reinstall Windows 11 or put up with Recall’s unavailability.
A lesson in the perils of early adoption
Even with a limited pool of testers, this issue highlights the challenges faced by those entering the testing phase of a new feature like Recall. With fresh updates and changes come more bugs, making it a Wild West for early adopters. Windows 11 testers, especially in the Canary and Dev channels, should expect more teething troubles as updates unfold.
