Mastering the NATO Watch Strap Challenge: A Solution to the Common Problem
How to Trim and Finish a NATO Strap
Step 1: Mark the Desired Length
When it comes to trimming a NATO strap, accuracy is key. To get the perfect cut, put the strap on your wrist and mark the desired length with a Sharpie on the underside of the strap. This will ensure a precise and even cut.
Step 2: Secure the Strap End
To achieve a smooth, rounded edge, slip a key ring between the wires of the ring and gently press it into place. Alternatively, you can use two coins to sandwich the strap and secure it with clamps. This step is crucial, as it will help you achieve the desired shape and prevent any uneven cuts.
Step 3: Cut the Excess Length
With the key ring or coin sandwich in place, use your non-dominant hand to apply gentle pressure while your dominant hand uses a blade to follow the curve of the ring or coins. Shave off the excess length, then go back with a razor to tidy up any uneven edges or stray fibers.
Step 4: Apply Fire
To prevent fraying and give your NATO strap a professional finish, apply a small flame to the cut ends. This will melt the nylon fibers and seal the edges. Be cautious not to burn too much, as this can leave a blackened appearance.
For the best results, use a butane-based torch lighter with a steady flame. This will provide a clean and controlled burn, ensuring a smooth finish.
