Marvel Rivals’ Pay-to-Win Scandal Sparks Outrage Among Fans
The "Pay to Win" Label May Not Be Appropriate for Marvel Rivals
When it comes to competitive games with microtransactions, the term "pay to win" often springs to mind. This phenomenon is characterized by the ability to buy items or abilities that give players an unfair advantage over their opponents. However, in the case of Marvel Rivals, fans are throwing around the label "pay to win" due to a rather different issue.
A bug has been discovered that gives some players an unexpected edge in battles. It’s not due to a pay-to-win mechanism, but rather a result of the game’s performance at different framerates. Figure 1: [Image of Marvel Rivals characters on a building]
In Marvel Rivals, the performance of the game at lower framerates has been found to affect certain hero abilities. Specifically, attacks that are typically powerful or effective at higher framerates are either less effective or execute more slowly at lower framerates. This issue affects five characters in particular: Star-Lord, Wolverine, Doctor Strange, Magik, and Spider-Man.
How It Affects Players
This bug is currently more of a problem for PC players, as the game’s performance can vary greatly depending on the hardware. However, as Marvel Rivals is a cross-platform game, it’s essential for console players to be aware of this issue, as they could be teaming up with PC players affected by it.
What’s Being Done to Fix It
NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, has been busy releasing patches focused on bug fixes. It’s likely that the team will be addressing this issue in an upcoming update. Figure 2: [Video of Spider-Man 2’s new web wings]
